Do you find yourself stuck in a job that pays the bills but doesn’t ignite your passion? Are you constantly plagued by stress, worry, and anger about your current circumstances? It’s time to break free from the mundane and ask yourself, “What is it that I want to do in life?” In this blog post, we’ll explore the idea of ditching Plan B and pursuing your true calling with determination.

For as long as I can remember, I’ve been drawn to the rhythmic heartbeat of the drums. My journey as a drummer began when I witnessed Ronnie Tutt’s captivating performance alongside Elvis in the 1970s. Since that moment, my life has been a relentless pursuit of becoming a professional drummer.

At every twist and turn, there were naysayers, doubters, and skeptics telling me that becoming a professional musician was an impractical dream. Sure, making a living as a musician is tough, but so is carving out a livelihood as a freelance reporter or journalist. The world is filled with challenges, and every career path has its hurdles; it’s about embracing the journey and staying true to your passion.

A staggering percentage of employees worldwide experience stress, worry, and anger in their professional lives. According to global statistics, nearly half of employees feel stressed at work, 40% worry about job security, and 23% harbor anger toward their circumstances. These alarming figures highlight the urgent need for a shift in mindset — away from settling for mediocrity and towards pursuing our true passions.

The concept of a backup plan, or Plan B, is ingrained in our societal norms. While practicality and financial stability are important considerations, it’s equally crucial to prioritize our dreams and aspirations. Ditching Plan B doesn’t mean abandoning responsibility; it means channeling energy into what truly matters to you.

Channeling energy into what truly matters is the key to a fulfilling and purpose-driven life. It involves a deliberate and conscious effort to focus on the aspects of our lives that align with our values, passions, and aspirations. By directing our energy toward what truly matters, we eliminate distractions and noise, allowing us to cultivate a sense of clarity and purpose. This might involve pursuing meaningful relationships, dedicating time to personal growth, or passionately chasing our dreams. It’s a commitment to authenticity and a refusal to be swayed by societal expectations or superficial pursuits. When we channel our energy into what truly matters, we unlock a profound sense of fulfillment, creating a life that resonates with our innermost desires and convictions.

Comparing the struggles of a musician to those of a freelance reporter or journalist reveals a common thread — the pursuit of a dream is filled with challenges. Whether it’s the competitive nature of the music industry or the constant hustle for freelance assignments, each path demands resilience and perseverance.

Embarking on my journey as a professional musician has been a lifelong pursuit rooted in passion and dedication. As a drummer, my commitment to the art of percussion has driven me to navigate the challenges of the music industry. Beyond the drum kit, I’ve expanded my creative horizons, embracing the written word as a powerful tool to share my experiences and insights. My role as a musician and writer has led me to contribute columns for prominent music trade magazines and websites, providing a platform to share my perspectives on the evolving landscape of the music industry. Whether delving into the intricacies of rhythm or exploring the dynamics of the music business, my writing has been a natural extension of my musical journey, offering a unique blend of artistic expression and industry expertise.

In addition to my contributions to music publications, I have taken the opportunity to delve deeper into the world of literature, authoring books that delve into the nuanced facets of my musical experiences. These books not only chronicle my journey but also aim to inspire aspiring musicians, shedding light on the highs, lows, and invaluable lessons learned along the way. Through this approach, I’ve found a balance between my roles as a professional musician and a storyteller, using both mediums to contribute meaningfully to the rich tapestry of the music community.

The Rhythmic Journey

Beyond my role as a professional musician and writer, I have found profound fulfillment as a drum teacher, where I impart my passion for rhythm to the next generation of aspiring drummers. As an educator, I strive to instill not only technical proficiency but also a deep appreciation for the art and discipline of drumming. These classes go beyond the beats and rhythms, incorporating elements of creativity, self-expression, and a holistic understanding of music. Through my teachings, I aim to cultivate a new wave of musicians who not only excel in their craft but also carry a profound understanding of the emotional and cultural dimensions of music.

In addition to drumming techniques, my classes extend into the realms of music business and life coaching. Recognizing the importance of equipping aspiring musicians with practical knowledge, I provide insights into the intricacies of the music industry. These music business classes empower students with the tools to navigate contracts, promotions, and the ever-evolving landscape of the music business. Simultaneously, the inclusion of life coaching lessons seeks to nurture not only musical skills but also personal and professional development. It’s a holistic approach aimed at preparing students not just for the stage but for the broader journey of life, encouraging them to navigate challenges with resilience, purpose, and a deep understanding of their own potential.

In every profession, the opportunity to be the best extends beyond mastering the technical skills of the trade. Whether you’re a mechanic, a cook, or in any other profession, the call is to elevate your impact beyond the immediate scope of your duties. If you’re a mechanic, aim not just to fix cars, but strive to make your community a better place through your shop. As a cook, go beyond merely preparing meals by creating dishes that are not only delicious but also healthy and nutritious. The pursuit of excellence isn’t confined to personal achievements but expands to the positive influence one can exert on the world. It’s about infusing purpose into everyday tasks, leaving a lasting imprint that transcends the boundaries of a job description and contributes to the collective betterment of society.

Life is too short to be confined by the limitations of Plan B. Embrace the uncertainties, face the challenges head-on, and channel your energy into what sets your soul on fire. The journey may be arduous, but the satisfaction of living life authentically is unparalleled.

It’s about embracing one’s true self, pursuing passions with dedication, and contributing to the world in a way that feels genuine. The path may be filled with obstacles, but the fulfillment derived from aligning one’s actions with one’s beliefs is immeasurable. It’s a journey that demands courage and a commitment to making choices that resonate with the core of who we are.

So, what is it that you want to do in life? The answer to this question should drive your choices and actions. Instead of succumbing to the pressures of societal expectations, dare to defy the norm. Forget about Plan B — focus on your passion, chase your dreams, and let the rhythm of your heart guide you to a life that truly resonates with who you are. Plan –B should be to succeed and at plan A! It’s time to say, “F*** Plan B!” and embrace the beat of your drum!
